Back in June, in the middle of the heat wave, Omar, my mom and I made our way to Vancouver Island for my niece’s graduation. It’s crazy to believe that this day finally came. I will always think of my grand siblings (yes, I made up this word) as 7 year olds and I have a hard time believing they are all almost old enough to be adults. My sister had Jade when I was fifteen years old and I have always thought of Jade as the younger sister I never had, with friends and family referencing her as my “mini me” as the years went on.
It was only natural that I would take Jade’s graduation photos while I was out, and I am so happy I was able to capture these memories. I told her to bring some friends along, and we made it into a little party. The day was a hot one (although I’m sure we all would like to forget the heat wave of 2021), but we managed to make it through with lots of laughs and the casual ocean breeze. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect evening with the yummiest sunset by the water. I often have people ask me “when is the best time for my session?” and my answer is sunset. Always. There’s something so special about the golden glow and the way it makes everything look so magical.
To my dearest Jade:
I wish you all the greatest successes in life. You have a great head on your shoulders, a kind heart, and hair made for a Pantene commercial. May you always take the road less travelled. Learn from your mistakes instead of worry over them. Take risks even if it scares you. And most importantly, keep your old auntie up to date with current trends and pop culture. I love you so much and am incredibly proud of the person you have become.
We even had some time to get some photos with her date – ohh la la
We were welcomed with the most beautiful sunset at the end of the session.
Before packing my camera up for the night, I’m happy I remembered to ask for a few photos with me. As a photographer, you are so used to taking photos for other people, I often forget to be in the photo myself and have a little memory captured forever.
